Illegal Gold in Colombia Now Rivals Coffee at US$3.5 Billion

A Universidad EAFIT study estimates Colombia’s illegal gold economy generates US$3.5 billion annually, comparable to coffee exports and a third of the cocaine economy. The sector contributes US$3 billion in added value, equivalent to 0.8% of Colombia’s GDP.
