Earthquake monitoring is coming to Mexico’s historically underserved northern states

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is building 58 new seismic monitoring stations in northern Mexico, targeting regions like Baja California, Sonora, and Chihuahua, which are historically under-instrumented despite tectonic activity. The project, funded by the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection, aims to improve earthquake data collection, rapid damage assessment, and intensity mapping within hours of tremors.
