[US] I need some advice on if I should report someone impersonating police to the non emerg line for PD in my area

A user was added to a text group chat by someone impersonating a detective named 'Detective Bobbert'. The chat included a Google-able number linked to a local business in a nearby city, where a real 'Police Officer Bobbert' works. The user is considering reporting the impersonation to the nearby city's police department.
