A Viable Cesspool Alternative Emerges On Hawaiʻi’s Coasts

Residents of Puakō, Hawai‘i, have developed a low-pressure liquid-only sewer system to replace cesspools and protect coral reefs. The project, led by Puakō For Reefs, aims to serve as a model for other coastal areas like Kahalu‘u and Miloliʻi. Hawai‘i County, initially skeptical, now supports the initiative as part of broader efforts to address nitrogen runoff.
