A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shakes part of southern Japan and a tsunami advisory is issued

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu, prompting a tsunami advisory from the Japan Meteorological Agency. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface.
