ICE extends no-bid contract for major detention center in Texas, rejecting calls for closure

The extension, which could cost taxpayers an additional $776 million, follows reports of detainee mistreatment, unsafe conditions, and at least three deaths at the facility. ICE cited operational and humanitarian risks as reasons for avoiding a competitive bidding process.
