Measles cases have reached a 35-year high

Measles cases in the U.S. have surpassed 2025 totals, reaching 2,318 confirmed cases as of July 23, 2026, the highest since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000. Most cases (93%) involve unvaccinated individuals, with vaccination rates in 44 states and D.C. below the 95% threshold needed to prevent outbreaks. The Pan American Health Organization may review the U.S. measles elimination status in November.
