Mexico is attracting more tourists — but they’re spending less

Mexico saw a 5.3% increase in international tourists between January and May compared to 2025, but tourism revenue fell 0.4% due to a 4.9% decline in average spending per visitor. The shift from high-spending air arrivals to lower-spending border tourists, driven by a 12.4% U.S. market contraction, has raised concerns about Mexico's transition to mass tourism.
