Debt collection scam?

A person received a phone call from Sutherland law office claiming to collect a Verizon debt from 2009. The caller provided an account number but could not corroborate the debt with mailed documentation, and the individual's credit report showed no reference to the debt. The caller mentioned a $1000 discount for immediate payment but could not resolve questions about the statute of limitations.
