Feds sue cities and states to block sanctuary policies

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed 27 lawsuits since January 2025 against 20+ cities, counties, and states over sanctuary policies that restrict cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Jurisdictions like Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and Philadelphia are among those sued for limiting ICE agents' activities in public spaces and requiring identification. The DOJ argues these policies violate constitutional principles, while advocates claim they protect community trust and assert states' rights.
