Oakland’s new police chief: a Purple Heart, three decades at OPD, and he’ll actually talk to reporters

James Beere, a 30-year veteran of the Oakland Police Department and Purple Heart recipient, has been officially named Oakland's police chief. He previously survived a bomb blast in Iraq and an attack at Lake Merritt, serving seven months as the city's de facto chief before the official appointment.
