Hamas says Khalil al-Hayya elected as group's new chief

Hamas announced the election of Khalil al-Hayya as its new political bureau head, succeeding Yahya al-Sinwar. Hayya, a veteran Hamas member and lead negotiator in ceasefire talks with Israel, survived an assassination attempt in Doha and defeated Khaled Meshaal in the leadership contest. Hamas stated the leadership council will dissolve, and Hayya is expected to assume the role next week.
