In November 2001, transport corporation employees' unions in Tamil Nadu went on a 16-day strike demanding a 20% annual bonus increase. During the strike, 28 people were killed in Thoothukudi district when a TNSTC bus, allegedly driven by a temporary casual labourer, was involved in an accident during Deepavali.
