EU loosens carbon market rules to let industry pollute for longer

The European Commission revised the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) to allow industries to emit greenhouse gases until the 2040s by slowing the annual reduction of pollution caps and extending free carbon permits. The changes include lowering the linear reduction factor from 4.4% to 1.7% annually by 2036 and permitting carbon credits from outside the EU starting in 2036.
