The European Union failed to force the European Commission to introduce sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank after less than half of the bloc’s foreign ministers supported action. The Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, resisted new trade barriers and did not present formal measures for member states to vote on, despite some countries pushing for a trade ban and other restrictions.
