IRS rolls out new automatic penalty relief program for eligible taxpayers
The IRS is launching the Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP) program, which will automatically waive penalties for eligible taxpayers with a history of timely filing and paying taxes. The program applies to 2025 and 2026 quarterly returns and future tax periods, eliminating the need for taxpayers to request relief manually. Not all returns, such as information returns or those filed for specific transactions, are eligible.
