Unchecked settlements near Gilgit raise Glof risks
Suparco warns that uncontrolled settlements near Gilgit city, fed by glacial lakes, increase risks of glacial lake outburst floods (Glofs) and overbank flooding. Satellite data shows a rapid rise in unfrozen lakes from 24 to 40 in two weeks, with urban expansion obstructing natural floodplains and heightening vulnerability to climate-induced disasters.
