GOP proposes State Department Africa staff revamp

Republicans proposed a hiring initiative to increase Africa specialists at the State Department, aiming to address staffing shortages and enhance diplomatic capacity amid competition from China, Gulf states, Türkiye, and Russia. The Foreign Service Modernization Act also seeks to expand expertise in Arabic, French, and Swahili. Frank Garcia was recently appointed as assistant secretary of state for African affairs.
