New construction reduces housing shortage in most states

New construction has reduced housing shortages in most states since 2020, improving affordability for apartments and single-family homes. However, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island have seen declines in housing units per capita, with New Jersey adding significantly fewer units than new residents. Vermont, the District of Columbia, and New Mexico added far more housing units than new residents.
