Former Syrian Prison Official Charged with Torture

Samir Ousman Alsheikh, a 72-year-old former head of Damascus Central Prison, has been charged with torture for allegedly ordering and personally inflicting severe physical and mental suffering on political prisoners between 2005 and 2008. The charges relate to his command of the prison during a period of significant human rights violations in Syria.
