California reports one of largest drops in homelessness in past year, Hud reports
California reported a 3% decrease in homelessness in 2025, among the five states with the largest drops, according to a US Department of Housing and Urban Development (Hud) report. Other states with significant declines include Illinois (44%), Hawaii (41%), Florida (11%), and New York (8%).
