Myanmar’s Wei family put on trial in latest phase of China’s crackdown on scam compounds

Wei Huairen, an alleged Myanmar crime boss, and members of his syndicate went on trial this week facing charges including fraud, murder, extortion and organizing illegal border crossings. The trial represents the latest phase of China's crackdown on cross-border scam networks. Prosecutors allege the Wei family used their military and political influence in Myanmar's Kokang region to operate the criminal syndicate from 2019 onwards.
