California island fire linked to sailor’s distress flare scorches 10,000 acres

A wildfire on Santa Rosa Island in Channel Islands national park has burned over 10,000 acres, becoming California's largest wildfire this year, and is currently at 0% containment. The fire threatens rare plant communities and has destroyed historic structures. About six dozen firefighters are deployed to control the blaze.
