Bolivia’s fuel shortages and ‘junk gasoline’ drive a surge in electric cars
Bolivia is experiencing a surge in electric car adoption due to fuel shortages and high gasoline prices, with the number of electric vehicles increasing from 500 to 3,352 in the last five years. The country's energy supply disruptions worsened in 2023, leading to a presidential decree that ended fuel subsidies and effectively doubled the cost of gasoline. Many Bolivians are abandoning their fossil fuel-powered cars for electric vehicles as a result.
